Contemporary Alexander School

Our most popular courses, translated and taught worldwide, the Living in a Body™ courses are highly experiential immersions designed to offer you information about the relationship between your potential and your beliefs. The Living in a Body™ course explores how you ‘use’ your body - your beliefs about your anatomical and physiological design. The Living In A Body of Choice™ course explores how you ‘wear’ your body - the underlying psycho-social-sexual-spiritual themes.

Living in a Body™ is a 20 hour body mapping certification course which offers a simple, clear, and fun exploration of the basic mechanics of human movement and support.  It is the quintessential owner’s guide to using our bodies in accordance with our design, allowing people of all ages to experience ease in their body.

Unfortunately, most people have never been taught how exquisitely our bodies are designed to do the basic movements of everyday life: reaching, standing, bending, sitting, walking, lifting, and so on. Thus we often ask our bodies to function in ways that we are simply not designed to handle – resulting in pain, injury, and degeneration.

The LIAB™ curriculum uses simple games and stories to teach you how your body is designed to move with ease and grace. The courses provide a manual, and the necessary tools for incorporating this knowledge into your daily life and professional endeavors.

LIVING IN A BODY™ has been slowly crafted by Robyn Avalon over 40 years of studying, teaching, and training others in the work of F. M. Alexander and the principles of Body Mapping. She has developed a practical and easy way to help people truly understand and embody the architecture and efficiency of our design.

What is Body Mapping?

Your nervous system uses your beliefs about your body to organize your body. Body Mapping is the study of your beliefs.  In LIAB™ you upgrade your software (beliefs) so that it accurately matches your hardware (anatomy), thus letting your body access natural ease, flexibility, and strength.

In this course, you will learn how to teach the LIAB™ games and etudes to individuals and groups, to recognize mismapping issues, and to apply LIAB™ to performance activities.

LIAB™ is open to all those interested in understanding the functional design of the body.  It is particularly useful for professionals and teachers in performing and fine arts, movement and martial arts, fitness and athletics, equestrians, primary educators, body workers, therapists, and health professionals.

LIAB™ Certification is an essential tool for group teaching. It is required for all CAS Teacher Trainers, as well as being an integral part of the CAS Post-Graduate and Professional Development Courses.

It is one of the most useful tools an Alexander Teacher can add to their toolbox!

LIAB™ offers 20 CEU’s for all professions.

The next session of LIAB™ will run from July 12 - Sept 6, 2022.

Self-Paced Online Weekly Study - The Level 1 Online Course offers a combination of weekly live virtual classes in support of weekly self-study lessons, so that you can study on your own timing.

Weekly Live Virtual Classes - Each Tuesday, at 8pm ET / 5pm PT, there will be a 60 minute live virtual class where I will introduce the themes for the coming week, as well as answer any questions you may have about the material from the preceding week.

These classes will be recorded, and there is no obligation to attend live, although it’s more fun!

It is open to everyone, and is equally useful for learning to be more comfortable in your own body, and as a professional tool to help your students and clients.

NOTE: LIAB™ and LIABC™ are sometimes offered as a one week retreat experience - contact us if you are interested in more information.

Living in a Body of Choice™

Living in a Body of Choice™

From a very young age, we are shaped, literally - physically, by our families, our communities, our culture.  We learn to embody the ideals which are presented to us as right/wrong or acceptable/unacceptable.  We are rewarded if we fit in - for looking, thinking, and behaving as our society dictates; and shunned, in subtle but clearly felt ways, if we do not.

We embody these societal teachings.  We literally wear them - like a layer of internal clothing.  They are so engrained, so much a part of who we were taught to be, that we don’t even feel this layer of social/physical binding.  And yet, this layer directly influences how we hold ourselves on the inside and how we present ourselves on the outside.

In this in-depth experiential course, we will identify the 6 primary psycho-social bodies and begin to sense, to feel, how these deeply embodied layers influence our ability to choose our unique life path.

We will question the need for these layers. Are they really you? Or do they limit you, perhaps in ways that you haven’t ever noticed directly. If you release them, who will you allow yourself to become?

We will learn how to recognize these beliefs, assumptions, and expectations which have become woven into cellular memory and fundamental coordination patterns, and how to release them - to clear your ‘stories’, your personal and genealogical history, from your body.

This is the beginning of creating your Body of Choice - consciously embodying the beliefs and archetypes of your choosing, rather than what you have been taught.

We will draw from a varied range of resources, including Matrix EnergeticsⓇ, Contemporary Alexander Work, archetypal embodiment, gender studies, process artwork, somatic resonance, and Deep Imagery. No previous experience is necessary.

NOTE: LIAB™ and LIABC™ are sometimes offered as a one week retreat experience - contact us if you are interested in more information.

Host A Living in a Body™ Course in Your Area

We live full, active lives, and it is often challenging to create the time and resources needed to consistently pursue our personal and professional explorations, especially when it involves travel. At CAS, we understand this, and have created a way to bring study opportunities to you and your community. Consider Hosting a LIAB™ or LIAB of Choice Course in your area! Or even a week-long immersion offering both courses. It is an ideal way to get to know your local community of like-minded ‘explorers’, or to offer a practical and meaningful continuing education immersion for your professional community. We also offer a range of study opportunities: introductory workshops, private lessons, special interest workshops, professional certification courses, and even satellite Alexander Teacher Training Programs. How do you start? Contact us. We will work with you to design an initial experience in your area, with your personal and professional communities. From there - who knows? You may find yourself taking an immersion course or professional training that you’ve always been interested in - without the extra time and expense of leaving home.
